As a fan of hardcore music (subgenre of techno), I decided to reproduce the logo of one of the biggest festivals of this kind of music called "Master of Hardcore". The idea came to me because I wanted a new system to integrate colored LEDs reacting to the music (one of my other projects).
Wanting something visually aggressive, I chose to make the skull in the middle of the logo in 3D and to make it with a 3D printer. Not finding what I was looking for on the various 3D file sharing websites, I decided to create it myself. I then watched a video to learn how to use " ZBrush ", a 3D modeling software allowing the sculpture.
The design of the skull
I looked for existing examples of the skull in 3D to inspire me and allow me to start the design. During the modeling, I also had to take into account the fact that the skull will be 3D printed and therefore adapt my design accordingly. After several dozen hours of work, I forced myself to stop the modeling, because I still found details to modify. So I finished preparing it for 3D printing by adapting its final size and cutting the model in specific places so that it would print smoothly.
Once all the pieces were printed, I glued them together and painted the whole thing with glue and iron powder.
The design of the rest
The main part being done, I started to model the rest of the logo and the support plate.
I decided to make the whole thing out of plywood, a wood that can be easily machined on a CNC. So I took the picture of the logo and imported it into Fusion360 to be able to transfer it. When putting it into 3D, I had to take into account several things:
- Use a thickness of wood that I already had, to avoid buying whole wood panels to use only a part of it.
To take into account the placement of LEDs and diffusers.
After several tries, I found an arrangement allowing me to use my wood stock, as well as the placement of LEDs and diffusers.
I bought several kinds of diffusers that matched the thickness required to get a visual rendering and to test each one's ability to twist to know where to position them on the logo.
To be continued...
